FALL

The rich yellows, reds, and oranges blanket the forest from late September through mid-October. Fall color in the Porkies is second to none. The fall color gives way to hunting season. Whether your game is ruffed grouse, bear, or deer, you will find a hunting experience worth experiencing.

Hunting & Fishing

Brook trout are found in the streams throughout the Porkies, with steelhead and salmon heading upstream from Lake Superior in the spring and fall, respectively. Lake trout, whitefish, and salmon are found offshore in Lake Superior.

Whitetail deer, black bear and ruffed grouse are favorite game species in the Porkies. Check Michigan DNR rules for seasons.

Fall Color Tours

The blaze of color that erupts in late September and early October is among the best to be found anywhere. You will want to stock up on film or memory cards for your camera!

Other activities that can be enjoyed in the fall are ATVing, boating, canoeing, golfing, hiking, touring historical sites, kayaking, and cultural events. See the links at left for more information.

Touring Historical Sites

The Ontonagon area’s rich history dates back to prehistoric copper mines which were the scene of the first mineral rush in America, even before the California Gold Rush days. Various minerals including red metal, copper, and silver brought many to the area in the 1840s.

The Ontonagon Village proper is the oldest permanent settlement on the south shore of Lake Superior. The Ontonagon River was the highway to the interior. Visitors to the area have the opportunity to tour the Ontonagon Harbor Lighthouse, experience the underground mine tours at Adventure Mine, and take a trip back in time at Old Victoria, an early mining camp. Visiting the Old Victoria is an amazing trip back in time where the creators had a true futuristic vision. The Ontonagon Historical Museum is rich in the history of mining, logging, maritime, and the lore of the native people of Ontonagon County.
