SUMMER

The lush green of the forest and the vibrant yellows, reds and purples burst through, creating a beautiful contrast. The deep blue skies are the perfect backdrop for the violet and orange sunsets over Lake Superior. The sun doesn’t set until nearly 10 p.m.! Stars blanket the rich black sky, and if you are fortunate, you will see the Northern Lights dance over the big lake. End your summer with the Porcupine Mountains Music Festival the last weekend in August.

Hiking

Hike through the Porkies and witness new fawns prancing with their mother and black bear cubs learning to forage for food. Don’t miss out on the interpretive hikes that are offered. The Porcupine Mountains have almost 100 miles of hiking trails. Shorter loops can be found for day hikes.

Boating

Want to see the Porkies from the lake? Rent or bring a kayak or canoe. Try fishing on one of the many inland lakes, fish the “Big Lake” by charter, or bring your own boat and dock at the Ontonagon Marina. Smaller boats can be launched from the Big Iron River or the Union Bay public access site.

Other activities that can be enjoyed in the summer are ATVing, canoeing, cultural events, fishing, golfing, touring historical sites, kayaking, mine tours, Paulding Mystery Light, Victoria Dam, waterfalls, and wildlife. See the links above left for more information.
